When to know it’s the right time for Assisted Living

Assisted Living

One of the challenging questions that a senior may have is: Am I ready for assisted living? Knowing what assisted living is can help you make the right decision. Here are some things you need to know about the service.

Assisted living is right for you if you need help with daily tasks, including using a restroom, dressing, eating, and bathing.

Residents may also get assistance with household chores and mental preparation.

Mobile. If you’re able to walk, use a mobility aid like a cane, walker, or a wheelchair without needing some assistance, you qualify for an assisted living residence.

Residence. As a resident of an assisted living center, you should be comfortable living in a studio or one-bedroomed apartment without a need for 24/7 care.

Health. Assisted living homes are not appropriate for an individual who needs on-going medical care, especially if they’re suffering from chronic ailments such as diabetes or arthritis. They should manage self-care independently.

Should you choose Assisted Living or a Nursing Home?

A nursing home is more suitable and convenient for those with more extensive needs because they require fully-staffed nursing care daily. Some may need on-going skilled nursing care while others temporarily stay in nursing to receive medical care from specialists.

A person needing around-the-clock assistance is unfit to use an assisted living facility. For example, an individual looking for senior living options may not fit well with assisted living since they may have not specialized equipment to help ailing patients with feeding tubes, insulin, injections, tracheostomies, and similar health services.

Bedridden. Bedridden individuals cannot use an assisted living center as it is independently ambulatory. While some offer facilities with transferring between bed and wheels, most do not have that assistance.

Memory care: Critical patients with memory care issues like dementia, chewing, or swallowing difficulties and have developed behavioral problems need high-quality care in a nursing home. So, an assisted living environment is inappropriate for them.
